Happy Leap Day!!!

Yes, it has been four long years since we’ve celebrated this most auspicious occasion, and I for one will not spend the day searching for Leap Day William (shout out to 30 Rock!).

I will use this day exactly as it was intended: adjusting my earthly calendar. I will synchronize my Blackberry, iPad, and day planner to make sure all of my appointments are documented. I will respond to emails that I have been ignoring for the past week, and I will not lose track of time while window shopping during lunch.

This all sounds nice, but I don’t think I’m serious…

Statistics show that the chances of being born on Leap Day are about 1 out of 1500. So if today is your birthday, why aren’t you celebrating?? It’s bad enough your driver’s license probably says your birthday is March 1. It’ll be another 4 years before you can actually celebrate your birthday ON your birthday! So get out there and take some leaps! Seize the day!

Having this extra day in the year presents an extra opportunity to do something that we’ve been thinking about forever, but always found an excuse to not make a move. Well today, take a leap! You’ll be glad you did.

carnival or Carnival???

Carnival parade

Happy Carnival Day!!

Yes, today is Carnival Day, a day that celebrates a top entertainment choice for families. Each year, hordes of people from all over attend carnivals to see, clowns, elephants, lions, gravity-defying acts, and most of all, to see what foods can be dipped in batter and fried. I’m not afraid to admit that I am afraid of the deep fried butter; maybe I’ll try the fried PB&J sandwich…

Many carnivals host a parade when they arrive to a new town to let folks know that they have arrived. Speaking of parades, today is also the last day of the Weekend after Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Sure, Carnival Rio ‘officially’ ended last Tuesday, but for many the best way to end a big party is with another big party! The Champions Parade starts on Saturday night, with the top six samba schools (yes, they take their samba VERY seriously, rehearsing for a full year perfecting songs and dance routines) performing, and the morning is ushered in with the Grand Champion school samba-ing to close out the festivities.

I hope you enjoy your carnival/Carnival Day, and celebrate with the ones you love the most. If they happen to be clowns, no worries, we’re not judging…

Do you see the value in this day??

“Use every letter you write, every conversation you have, every meeting you attend to express your fundamental beliefs and dreams. Affirm to others the vision of the world you want.”

Dr. Robert Muller
Former UN Assistant Secretary-General

What is your plan for for your business today? Are you making cold calls? Following up with referrals? Visiting potential customers and business partners? If you are passionate about what you do, you won’t be able to resist seeing opportunity in every encounter. I hope that you will see the value in this day and take advantage of the chance to share your dreams today. You never know who is just waiting for someone in your profession to come along and tell them about it!

F-A-T Tuesday!!

Happy Mardi Gras!!!!

Mardi Gras (AKA Fat Tuesday)  is the last day of the Carnival season and the day before Ash Wednesday. It is always 46 days before Easter. It officially starts on Twelfth Night, 12 days after Christmas. Many people view this day as their last chance to do everything that they aren’t supposed to be doing before Lent. As for me, it’s another day to celebrate living, warts and all. The Mardi Gras masks display the comedy and sadness that we all face in life, and celebrating in spite of it all.

I hope you get lots of beads (without having to flash anything) and all the doubloons you can stand!!

Think Outside the Wine Box…

Are you an eccentric outlier? Do you go out of your way to get off the beaten path? Don’t feel like you have to host the same parties as everyone else. Groundhog Day is the perfect opportunity to honor Punxsatawney Phil! (especially if you prefer omnivores of the fourlegged furry persuasion…

Better yet, why not celebrate Make a Friend Day (February 11) with a party! Sure, you could chat with the person behind you in the grocery line, reach out to a relative unknown on Facebook, or follow somebody new on Twitter. But what better way to make some new friends than to break out some drinks, crudites, and a little festive music? That’s what I call FRIENDLY.

If you’re just determined to host an event, don’t wait until the next Halloween or New Years. Make Wednesday a special occasion.

Love is in the Air….

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

The word for today is: Love.

Love your sweetie, love your children, love your family, love your friends, love your pets, love your frenemy (WWJD). Most of all, love yourself. Use this day to show love for yourself by letting go of old hurts, grudges, chips on the shoulder, and drama. Not only will you have more time to focus on more important things, like how you will celebrate Valentine’s night (wink), but it will do your heart good, making it easier to spread the love to those that deserve it.

Themed Party Tip

If you are planning to host a themed party at your home and the thought of the ever-growing list of tasks makes you nauseous, enlist the help of your friends. Don’t feel like cooking? Make it a potluck! Some of your guests (probably not the offense guys) may actually feel bad to see you running around like a plucked chicken during the party, so this gives them a chance to help out a little. Also, once everybody leaves, taking their dishes with them, you have less to clean up!
